How to Make the Photoshoot Fun for Your Toddler

Let's be honest – photographing toddlers can feel like trying to capture a whirlwind in action. As someone who's spent countless hours working with little ones in Guelph's most beautiful outdoor spots, I've learned that the key isn't getting them to "behave" – it's embracing their wonderful, wild energy and turning it into magic. Here's how we can make your photo session an adventure your toddler will actually enjoy.

Forget Perfect Poses, Embrace Play

The moment we try to make a toddler sit still and smile is usually the moment they decide to do exactly the opposite. Instead of fighting this natural instinct, we'll work with it. When your little one wants to explore that fascinating stick they've found or jump in puddles with their rain boots, these become our photo opportunities. Some of the most heartwarming images come from letting toddlers simply be toddlers.

Creating Comfort Before Clicks

Your toddler might need time to warm up to me and my camera – and that's completely okay. I've learned that rushing this process never works. Sometimes we start by simply playing peek-a-boo behind my camera, or I might talk to or play with them to make myself familiar to them. Building trust takes time, but it's worth every minute.

Following Their Lead

Every toddler arrives at our session with their own personality and energy level for that day. Some are ready to run and explore from the moment they arrive, while others might need gentle encouragement to come out of their shell. We'll follow their lead. If they're feeling energetic, we might play follow-the-leader through the park. If they're feeling clingy, we'll capture those sweet snuggle moments with mom or dad.

Making It An Adventure

Photo sessions with me aren't about standing still and saying "cheese." They're about going on bear hunts through the tall grass, finding fairy houses in tree roots, or having dance parties in open fields. When children are engaged in play and adventure, their genuine personalities shine through – and that's when the magic happens.

Working With (Not Against) Their Moods

Even the most easy-going toddler can have their moments. Maybe they're tired, hungry, or just not feeling it that day. Instead of pushing through, we can take breaks. Have a snack. Watch the birds. These moments are part of real life with toddlers, and sometimes they lead to the most authentic photographs.

Tips for Parents

Remember, your toddler feeds off your energy. If you're stressed about getting the "perfect" photo, they'll sense it. Instead, come prepared to play and have fun. Pack their favourite snack, bring a beloved toy, and maybe even a change of clothes (because you never know when they might need them!). Most importantly, release those expectations of perfection. Your toddler's authentic personality – whether they're energetic, shy, or strong-willed – is exactly what we want to capture.

The Beauty of Imperfection

Some of my favourite images are the ones that weren't planned: the toddler mid-giggle as dad swings them around, the curious expression as they discover a ladybug, or even the grumpy face that perfectly captures their determined personality. These real moments tell your family's story far better than any posed portrait ever could.

With me, you’ll enjoy a judgment-free zone. Whether your little one wants to run wild or needs extra time to warm up, we'll work at their pace. After all, the best toddler photos happen when toddlers feel free to be exactly who they are – perfect in their own wonderfully imperfect way.
